Infotainment System

In my Interaction Design class at MSOE I was assigned to create an interactive infotainment system following the design thinking process from ideation to testing of the final digital prototype then present our solution.

Role: Designer and Researcher

Team Size: 3

Duration: 9 weeks

Design process

Starting with the Person

Before starting on the project we needed to determine current frustrations and necessary features so we can define which problems to solve. To understand this we conducted interviews then created personas

Wireframes

Initial sketches were done on paper then after group discussion and further brainstorming they were moved digitally and finally the interactions were put in place. Wireframes and protoypes were made for a variety of tasks including calls, music, settings, and temperature controls.

Outcome

In the most labor intensive, yet one of the most fun parts of the project we created in depth interactivity and introduced color and visual design to prepare for testing.

We conducted user testing both in person and remotely to determine problem areas and corrected major usability issues. Once this was completed we presented our work.

Challenges

Time constraints were the biggest challenge for our team, completing a high fidelity prototype from scratch with interactions across multiple modes (steering wheel and touch screen). With a relatively small team in only 9 weeks, the high fidelity prototyping had to be completed within a few days to complete user testing in time to make changes. Documenting our design decisions also became time consuming when so much work is being done in such a short amount of time.
